Project Introduction

Amid the recent wave of youth returning to the Yangtze River Delta countryside, the demographic composition and lifestyles of Qingshan Village are being reshaped, while new forms of public space to accommodate this shift remain scarce. Tabian Market was conceived as an all-day, open-access “village commons.” Multiple entrances extend the village’s original pathways, allowing everyday routes to pass naturally through the site. In walking and lingering, public life is continuously generated. The flowing plan gives the market flexibility between daily and collective use: in the morning people buy vegetables, in the evening they rest, stroll, or talk with neighbors, and at significant moments they gather for communal meals or performances. Even the village dogs instinctively claim the space. The market provides tangible support for daily life while rebuilding social connection and shared identity between the familiar and the new.

Rather than following a fixed model, the form of Tabian Market responds to the complexity of local life. A plinth enclosed by curved fragment walls accommodates stalls, restrooms, and recycling stations, while above rises a continuous catenary canopy evolved from a simple gabled prototype. The roof’s eaves were carefully refined in outline and elevation to balance clarity of scale with neighborhood privacy, while optimizing shading and ventilation for comfort.

Structurally, the building combines locally sourced bamboo with tensioned steel catenaries. Bamboo tubes act both as an exposed natural surface and as permanent formwork that adds stiffness, while the steel cables provide precise, calculable strength. This hybrid system, where traditional craft meets industrial precision, creates new possibilities between the handmade and the engineered. Columns, beams, and catenaries are given subtle color modulation, softening the perception of contrast so that technique and nature interweave.

The process of making the market likewise resists a single standard. Stalls and lighting fixtures were co-crafted by architects and bamboo artisans, while the bamboo roof cladding is partially renewed each year during the village’s “Repair Festival.” In this way, the architecture remains in a state of “unfinishedness,” continuously updated over time and serving as a vessel for the participation of both longtime and returning residents.
